Environment Conservation Research in Jitpur

Our international volunteers under “Environment and conservation” recently observed 140 households and interviewed same number of people in jitpurphedi. This research depicted people’s knowledge on waste management, hygienic practice and challenges related to waste management in the community. However, it is planned to observe 360 numbers of household i.e. about 40% of total household in Jitpurphedi. The results generated will be verified and will be very helpful to plan the awareness program accordingly.

According to “Country paper Nepal, SACOSAN IV” the national sanitation coverage was 6% in 1990, 43% in 2010. However,  the rural people of nepal lack proper awareness of hygiene and sanitation and also have very limited access to basic health services. 16 million people in Nepal (57 %) daily defecate out in the open due to the lack of latrines in their home. Only 41 % of public and community schools have latrine facilities. (Nepal MDG Progress report 2010, GoN and UNDP). 200 households in jitpur do not have toilet (out of 917) and there is no waste management system existed. There is no policy document available on waste management and sanitation.
Led by 20 year vision (1997-2017), the government proposes to achieve universal access to coverage for water and sanitation services and intervention by 2017.  VIN in coordination with Village Development committee has planned to declare Jitpur as an open Defecation free community. This research will be very helpful to evaluate the existing situation of Jitpur and implement planned strategy on waste management in near future.

Without an intensive research, the proper plan for community development proves to be a failure. Therefore, we focus in a research activity so as to illustrate the facts and figure in the community. VIN invites you to be a part of our research initiative program or projects such as water research, Climate change research, Environment Initiative , Agro farm, and Agro forestry under Environment and conservation program
