When I first had the idea of volunteering in Nepal I thought that it would be some sort of magical experience in a little hillside village of Nepal, giving my time to make much positive change to the community. I have since learned that cultural immersion and daily work at the farm is all that, but far more gritty than the mind may entertain! I also thought that 3 weeks was enough time, but really, it was just enough time to settle in! Nonetheless, I could see small but positive changes at the farm I worked at, and that is the satisfaction one expects when embarking upon these endeavours. And I most definitely got that, as I am sure most would who would spend there time with VIN. The homestay was a remarkably positive experience, and I feel now like I have a Nepali family. Never have I met a family more welcoming, warm and accommodating as my host family, it truly is a beautiful thing to have had this experience and I will remember it, and the people that made it, until the day I die. It is also a fantastic way to learn Nepali culture and language. The noble endeavour of charity has the potential to form unrealistic goals and misguided applications, but VIN is an organization whose projects are sound and whose goals are realistic. And it is worthless giving support to a person or community that is not as well off as oneself if that support creates dependence. This is something that VIN maintains not just in philosophy but in practicality through all their projects. I have much respect for VIN, I think they have a very solid plan and great management. Support was given whenever it was needed and suggestions were always asked so that they may constantly improve. Moreover, the staff are extremely friendly and supportive and I have made many friends here. This is an experience I will never forget.
