EU Aid volunteers for humanitarian projects in Nepal
Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) is one of the EU Aid Certified hosting organization. It has been implementing many projects to support and uplift the life standard of the people of Nepal in different communities with the mission of empowering marginalized communities through equitable, inclusive and holistic development programmes. Women Empowerment/ Gender issues, Children Development, Youth Development, Public health and medical care, Environment conservation and Disaster response rebuilding are its major programs.
VIN has selected six EU Aid volunteers initiative from the series of interviews in June and July under SuDHAV project in which ADICE, France is the sending partner. The EU Aid Volunteers initiative provides opportunities to European citizens and long-term residents, from a wide range of backgrounds and with a diversity of skills and professional experience, to get involved in humanitarian aid projects, support the provision of needs-based humanitarian aid in third countries and engage in volunteering opportunities, through deployment and online-volunteering.
The volunteers will involve in three different projects from September, 2018 for nine months. They will carry out series of activities in Gender issues, Risk and disaster management and rebuilding and Organization Development.
Gender Inequalities is one of the major issues in Nepal. There is huge different in Illiteracy on the ratio of – 24.9 male Vs 42.6 female. Nepalese women haven’t got the same access to education because of a patriarchal society. The major activities of the volunteers under Gender Issues are to develop the training course together with VIN staff and deliver it to the local women group, support local women in their farm and business, support/help Cooperative staff in financial management and record, Work and train local staff and women group in keeping financial record, loans and other business, organize and facilitate various life skills trainings to the women in the community, help local staff develop projects and search for grants and write grants proposals based on the need of local community.
After the devastating earthquake of 2015, the situation in Nepal is desperate. Many parts of the communities are destroyed to dust and many lives lost their houses and properties in this earthquake. This massive earthquake not only left people poor but many people are now homeless and living in very cold and small temporary shelters. The Disaster risk management project helps people bring them in normal life. Conduction of research on risk and disaster in the community, support on reconstruction and renovation of the houses for poor and needy people, educate on safe earthquake resistance houses/schools, raise awareness and provide training on disaster preparedness to the community people and school children and work with other volunteer for crowd funding and raising funds to support the earthquake victims are the major activities of this project.
Organisational development and capacity building project helps to support of the local organization team in the construction and development of new humanitarian, rehabilitation and development projects (research of potential supporting programs and donors, concrete support in the project proposal writing, in the development of local, national and international network with partners and institutions…). It helps to support in the organizational development of the local structure (building of organization strategy, support in development of new management and monitoring activities.
