VIN Conducts Primary English Teachers’ Training
primary teacher training
Dwayne Cover, a Canadian volunteer ( who works in a university in Japan) for VIN conducted a 3-day teacher development training workshop for Elementary school teachers (from pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6) from the Jitpur area. The workshop was designed to introduce a range of English-language activities that the teachers could employ in their classes and address questions regarding lesson planning and student motivation. There were 16 English teachers from 10 primary schools (Kalikasaran PS, Mahadevsthan PS, Saraswoti PS, Khadawalkot PS, Pnachmanne EDC centre, Jitpur Higher Secondary, Nagarjun Higher Secondary, Tarkeswor High School and Kathmandu Vidhya Mandir Secondary Schools) from Jitpurphedi and Chahabil areas.
The first day was primarily composed of introducing new activities for practicing all four of the basic skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition to describing the activities, each was also modeled with the participation of the teachers.
The second day introduced a few warm up activities and then focused on modifying the activities (from both the first day and the second day) to fit specific teaching points from the class textbooks. The second day wrapped up with an introductory look at balanced lesson planning.
The final day began with two final warm up examples and then moved onto the application of the activities to specific teaching points from the textbooks. The session was completed with a short Q&A session on general teaching techniques and ideas to motivate young students.
