21st September, 2014: The training on Mental Well-Being continued this week with the women in the village of Dadagaun. This week’s classes focused specifically on Assertiveness Communication. VIN Volunteer Amelia Abernathy from America is the trainer for this training session and local volunteer Pranita Nepal helped by translating her words to the participants. The training included psycho education on four types of response styles (aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive), key elements to assertive communication, and specific strategies to implementing assertive techniques. Women were able to discuss common issues of conflict within the community, barriers to effective communication, and instances in which assertive communication could be practiced. Through discussion, problem solving, and shared stories, the women were able to ascertain the basic skills of assertive communication.

Additionally, VIN offered a program on Healthy Relationships with a men’s group in the village of Dadagaun this past week. Healthy relationship beliefs versus unhealthy relationship beliefs were openly and candidly discussed amongst group members. Assertive communication, psychoeducation on origins of maladaptive behavior, and strategies on managing specific communication issues were discussed. The class was well attended and appeared to be well-received by the participants. It is with hope that through educating the men in these communities, issues revolving around gender based violence can begin to be addressed.

Language classes for the young adults of Dadagaun were completed this week, and, upon the request of the participants, two days of instruction in computer skills was given. Internet usage, email set up, review of Microsoft Word and Excel, and basic computer skills were discussed and practiced.

VIN warmly welcomes you to be part of VINs women’s empowerment project. Join us now!!!
