Public Health Medical Care Project in Kathmandu
VIN has been working in marginalized communities since 2007. It has been working to create healthy communities with public health and medical care program. VIN has already successfully implemented the PHMC (Public Health Medical Care) project in two communities of Kathmandu. So far VIN has served more than 15000 people through health clinic and awareness campaigns. Last month, Cardio Vascular disease prevention campaign in Kavresthali was conducted which benefited around 400 people. There was a team of volunteers facilitating this campaign with the participation of both local and international volunteers working for this project. About 50 volunteers were involved, where they felt good learning from the project. Here is a view expressed by a local youth who was highly motivated to do the volunteering.
“Hello, I am Nirmala Puri from Teku, Kathmandu. I am a student of social work. I am recently doing my bachelor in Arts of Social Work from Padma Kanya Multiple Campus, Kathmandu. During my course, I have to do field work and I found VIN through Facebook and came to work with them. I found VIN is an organization with a mission of empowering marginalized communities. It helps to promote equality, economic wellbeing, and basic human rights. In VIN my work was to volunteer in Public Health through which I learn about Cardio Vascular Diseases and its prevention. Dr. Laxmi Prasad Ghimire, in-charge of PHMC project helped us to make our daily routine. He gave us an orientation & motivation class. I was really motivated by his words.
For this work, we went to a place name Kavresthali. Where we visited almost 13 villages. I gain lots of experience from this field work. In which walking around the village was my favorite part because I have never walked that much in my life. And working with international volunteers was really great learning for us. Because they were really hard working and always encourages us to work. And one of the most unforgettable moments was we visited farmers who were working in the field and we measure their blood pressure and sugar. I explained to them about the blood pressure and convinced them for the routine checkup. By working in this project I found myself really friendly and develop my confident level by speaking in front of many people. While working in the field people were friendly as well. I found some people were very complicated to orient. I am really happy to say that working as a volunteer in VIN was a really good experience in my life.”
